Eggleston is best known for The Hoosier Schoolmaster, but many believe Roxy to be his finest novel. Roxy is set in the 1840s in a small Ohio River town and brings to life the charms of that era. However, Roxy also portrays the ignorance and prejudices of that time, both intentionally and un-intentionally.
